Based on a 2008 "Action Comics" storyline by Geoff Johns, "Superman: Unbound" is the latest in a series of movie adaptations from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment. The story finds Superman (voiced by Matt Bomer, "White Collar") and his cousin Kara/Supergirl (Molly C. Quinn, "Castle") attacked by Brainiac (the great John Noble, "Fringe"), an alien who attacks planets, shrinks one city small enough to fit into a bottle, then destroys the rest of the planet. The other story thread features Superman struggling to relate to the women in his life, including Lois Lane (Stana Katic, "Castle"). This is a great film with witty dialogue and an interesting villain. Fun for fans of Superman and the DC Universe.
This live-action family spinoff from the cult favorite "Doctor Who" series features his longtime robot pet dog, K-9, as re-imagined by "Doctor Who" creator Bob Baker. However, if you're a "Doctor Who" fan, don't expect any major crossovers. This was not produced by the BBC, so K-9 conveniently loses his memory and has to start over with new companions. K-9 is a cybernetic creature from the 50th century with the appearance of an earth dog. He travels to the 21st century, arriving at the London home of Professor Gryffen, a renowned scientist working on the Alien Space-Time-Manipulator, which can open a portal to anywhere in space and time. When alien warriors attack Gryffen and two teenagers - homeless rebel Starkey and brainy girl Jorjie - K-9 self-detonates to save them, but is soon regenerated thanks to a device implanted in his mainframe. Now he can fly and do other cool stuff, and thus begins his quest to not only protect humanity, but also discover more about his past. It's a fun mash-up of "The X-Files," "Men in Black," and "Ghostbusters," with lots of action and adventure.
I love that LEGO has created a whole other alternate universe to the alternate universe of DC Comics. In this movie, when Bruce Wayne (voiced by Troy Baker) receives the man of the year award, fellow billionaire Lex Luthor (Clancy Brown) becomes jealous and decides to run for President. To create an atmosphere of fear-based politics, Lex recruits the Joker (Christopher Corey Smith) to perfect a Black LEGO Destructor Ray which wreaks havoc on Gotham. As Lex destroys Batman's tech, Batman reluctantly turns to Superman (Travis Willingham) for help. Of course, it's all designed to sell LEGO toys, but the movies are still really fun.
