Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brown ground meat and minced onion together until fully cooked, drain.
Mix in soup. Pour mixture in a greased casserole dish. Cover mixture with cheese until no meat is exposed.
Cover the cheese layer with tator tots. (I like to take the time to line the tots side by side, it makes it easier to serve.
Season the tots with garlic salt or other seasonings (I like creole), to taste.
Place the uncovered dish in the oven for 20 min., or until the tator tots are brown and the cheese is bubbling.
