I was searching for ways to have better communication with my children. My favorite suggestion was keeping a communication notebook with each of my children. We call it the “Mommy and Me” journal.
I still try to have individual time with each child but having a meaningful form of communication has been very good for us. We mainly use our notebooks for things that we forgot to talk about before bedtime or silly jokes. This not only helps us have a better relationship with my children, but it also helps them with their writing skills. It helps them write their thoughts down, which will benefit them tremendously when they start writing essays.
My 8-year-old had been struggling with reading and writing, which was difficult for me as his mom. But with the extra help he has been receiving at school, extra reading at home and writing in his Mommy and Me notebook, he has made significant progress. And he doesn’t even know he’s getting extra practice because writing in the notebook is fun for him.
Having communication with your children shows them respect and helps boost your child's self-esteem. It’s also a great way to refresh your bond with your child.
You can start a Mommy and Me (or Daddy and Me) journal by using a spiral notebook you have lying around the house or purchase a journal that has writing prompts and other ways to connect.
