Summer Schedule Solved
By Jennifer Snyder
Whether your "official" summer is now or next week, surviving can be a real challenge for many families. The transition from bedtimes and study time to sleeping late and all-day munching can be overwhelming for even the most prepared parent. The trick is to avoiding day-after-day of the same old soap operas and video games. Here are a few suggestions to help make your summer an opportunity to make memories and create a summer schedule that is sensational instead of sweltering.
Designate Days (or weeks): Select a theme for the day. It can be as simple as Pool Day or Park Day or go so far as Pirate Day and Underwater Adventure Day. Incorporate an outing and a craft for each day as well as a lesson in disguise where you can. Want to increase the fun? Share with a few families and celebrate Pirate Day together! Example: dress like pirates, talk like pirates, eat like pirates, go to the lake, older kids can research and make recommendations on how to be the best pirates.
Create a Summer Bucket List: Instead of getting off the couch and realize summer is gone, have all family members create a list of things they would like to do this summer. Incorporate those into the Day schedule!
Summer Family Routine: Create a routine based on things that have to be accomplished regularly like eating, bathing, chores, and charity. For those super crafty parents, incorporate your Day theme into your chores like swab the decks on Pirate Day! Be sure to include quiet time on your schedule. Quiet time can be reading, computer games, puzzles, etc. Create a system for quiet time to rotate so they don't get bored.
Talk to your spouse and get him or her on board then have a family meeting to divvy up summer chores and create the bucket list. A little creativity can go a long way to enjoying every single one of the dog days of summer.
Summer is a great time to create family time and like all things, when we aren't deliberate it gets away from us. One last suggestion although I loathe to mention it: if you have a student with a summer assignment, get everyone involved to help support him or her so they don't feel so left out.
Have a Neat day!
