I would imagine that most of us have a treasure from our childhood that has weathered the years and made it into our adult lives. For some, it's a special blanket used for comfort. For others it's a treasured found on a first trip to the beach. I have seen everything from stuffed animals to Green Stamps. These treasures were once a source of comfort in one way or another. They hold the always present "Sentimental Value".
Provided your home doesn't resemble a museum or warehouse as the result of such treasures and they bring you pleasure or comfort, I would say they are harmless. One or two, anything less than five should be reasonable. Note: 3 dozen Glamour Gals does not count as 3 items.
When you keep something sentimental, ask yourself what it is that is so special. Often, we keep something that reminds us of something not-so pleasant or we keep it just because we don't know what to do with it. Could your 30-year old homecoming mum be one of those things?
If you are going to keep things simply for the sake of keeping them (and you are entitled to do so), at least do a favor for anyone in the position to have to sort through your items in the future. Document the story. There is a reason it is so special and since you love it enough to keep it, love it enough to share your story.
My very favorite thing to do is take photos of beloved items, document the stories, then turn them into a coffee table book. These make amazing gifts for family members as well.
Here are some quick tips on storing your childhood treasures:
Clothing, Shoes & Textiles: Send it to the dry cleaners, wrap in acid-free paper inside a plastic bag. I prefer gallon-size Ziploc bags or Space Bags.
Jewelry and Silver: Make sure it is professionally cleaned then store in a jeweler's box with cotton batting. If it is silver, place the box inside a sealable plastic bag to prevent tarnishing.
Figurines: Painted figurines should be wrapped in soft paper towels then wrapped with bubble or foam wrap.
Clutter is anything that gets in the way of the life you want to live. There is a time to purge and a time to store. Choose carefully and live your life!
