Scrolling through my social media feed one day I came across a compilation video of cats being afraid of vegetables, jumping in and out of boxes, and stealing food off their owners’ plates. As I watched their antics and laughable missteps, I began to see a resemblance between these kitty comics and my two-year-old. They are both cute, cuddly creatures that can turn on you at a moment’s notice.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that toddlers are just fur-less felines. Here are some other similarities.
1. They’d rather sleep in your bed than their own
It doesn’t matter that you spent an inordinate amount of money on a comfortable bed made just for them. They will still wait until you’re asleep and slowly sneak under your comforter and become a very uncomfortable heater.
2. Their moods are unpredictable
One minute they are happy and affectionate, and in the next moment, they are biting or scratching and squirming away.
3. Affection is on their terms
If you are begging for a snuggle you might as well forget it. You must play hard-to-get when it comes to love. Soon, they will be climbing in your lap, silently asking you to forgive them for their tantrums.
4. They are picky eaters
If you try to feed them something that is not the same size, color and consistency as the food at every other meal, then you can expect a protest from these pint-sized dictators.
5. They can sleep in any position
How many times have you walked through the living room and found them draped over a couch cushion or curled up in a precarious location? They’re flexibility and sudden urge to nap can be a recipe for some interesting sleep positions. Even if they look uncomfortable, resist the urge to move them. Sudden wakefulness can cause an instant shift in their peaceful demeanor.
6. They’d rather play with found objects than expensive toys
Even though you spent hours researching the perfect play things to encourage brain development and stimulate positive parental bonding, they would rather entertain themselves with the cardboard box it came in and ignore you completely.
7. They misjudge distances
They have no fear when it comes to jumping from one precipice to another. That kitchen counter top is three feet from the kitchen table, but they can make it.
8. They push things off high surface to watch them fall
It doesn’t matter that you just poured that glass of milk. It’s more fun to see the spectacular splatter your beverage makes on the kitchen floor.
9. They have no remorse for their messes
They go potty on the floor. They throw up in the corner. They splash toilet water all over the seat. And yet they don’t feel bad about their actions. They know there’s a big person at their beck-and-call who will clean up after them.
10. They love unconditionally
Even though they can test your patience and make you consider moving to the mountains by yourself, when they do decide to snuggle up with you on the couch or give you a nudge when you’re having a bad day, you know they love you even though you’re not perfect either.
